The MacEwan University Big Band, now in its 46th year, is the flagship ensemble of the Music Department. It provides students with the opportunity to gain experience performing historical and contemporary big band music. For 36 seasons it has been under the directorship of Professor Raymond Baril. The band has had the distinct opportunity of working with internationally renowned musicians such as Maria Schneider, Bob Mintzer, Wayne Bergeron, Eddie Daniels, Ernie Watts, Sunny Wilkinson, Phil Woods, Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby Shew, Christine Jensen, as well as Edmonton’s own Tommy Banks and PJ Perry. They have been a featured ensemble at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival, Cantando Music Festivals in both Edmonton and Whistler, B.C., MusicFest Canada in Vancouver B.C., Alberta International Band Festival in Edmonton, International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in Washington D.C., and Rocky Mountain Festival in Banff.

After a year of uncertainty due to Covid restrictions, the ensemble was allowed to rehearse and perform under the provision of strict protocols. Following up on bands success of their January 30 live-streamed they will be presenting their final concert; a one and a half hour live-streamed concert featuring music from the libraries of Maria Schneider, Sammy Nestico, Ellen Rowe, Gordon Goodwin, Thad Jones, Patti Darling and Steely Dan, and by composers and arrangers such as Shirley Horn, Joni Mitchell, Tony Succar and MacEwan alumni, Stephanie Urquhart.

Please join the ensemble virtually to listen, watch and celebrate a year of music making. We ask you to share this link with anyone who you think might be interested.
