The MacEwan University Big Band, now in its 46th year, is the flagship ensemble of the Music Department. It provides students with the opportunity to gain experience performing historical and contemporary big band music. For 36 seasons it has been under the directorship of Professor Raymond Baril. The band has had the distinct opportunity of working with internationally renowned musicians such as Maria Schneider, Bob Mintzer, Wayne Bergeron, Eddie Daniels, Ernie Watts, Sunny Wilkinson, Phil Woods, Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby Shew, Christine Jensen, as well as Edmonton’s own Tommy Banks and PJ Perry. They have been a featured ensemble at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival, Cantando Music Festivals in both Edmonton and Whistler, B.C., MusicFest Canada in Vancouver B.C., Alberta International Band Festival in Edmonton, International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in Washington D.C., and Rocky Mountain Festival in Banff.
This one hour live streamed concert will feature music from the libraries of Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Ramirez and Tower of Power and by composers and arrangers such as Bill Holman, Billy May, Sammy Nestico, Fred Sturm, and Michael Mossman.
